why wont our cash register let us press any buttons while beeping?

our sharp xe-a102 cash register has a P in the left hand side of the display. Its not letting us press any buttons apart from the numbers. when you try to press anything it beeps and goes back to 'P 0.00'
it wont let us open the drawer either
