Vacuum cleaners cool the motor with exhaust air - but to stop dust and grit getting into the motor the air first passes through a filter. If the filter gets dirty because the operator fails to clean it then the airflow is restricted - the motor gets hot - and the over-heat safety switch operates.
This may be your problem - check the internal filter -clean it.
