Simpson 428 riviera please could you tell me why agitator only turns one way stops turns fractionally locks then repeats the other way again appeciate your answer thanks Norm

Either the brake arm is stuck in the out position, usually because the release solenoid has overheated and stuck so it can't drop back or else there is a problem with the clutch spring binding up. You will have to look underneath and check the brake arm. If it is free to move up to and away from the gearbox then next thing would be to remove and check the clutch.
