when I try to start camera it makes a really loud buzzing noise trying to extend, but does not open even a fraction. tried tapping, blowing, paper round bezels but no luck. not enough expertise to open camera and delve inside. anything else I could try. the camera is 5 years old now, is it worth the cost of repair, I would only like to spend £60 max? THANKS

Hi, You'd be surprised that it isn't that hard to get the lens out to clear the sand in the mechanism. Rather than try to expain here, have a look at this youtube video which will give you excellent instructions:
