Can a starting motor damage the gear box? How much should it cost to replac?

Apparently my starting motor has failed on my Ford KA 2010 broken off with material from this falling into my gear box and damaging it? could this realistically happen, I’m perplexed. The garage stated it will be about 5 hundred pounds to fix? I’m in shock....
