Battery fault?

my alarm panel shows BF for battery fault and emits a beep. I have put a meter across the battery and it still holding a charge. What could the problem be? Would a new battery solve it?

Think of a battery as a petrol tank just because you can smell petrol, it doesn't mean there is any fuel in the tank.
