Indicator lights doing odd annoying things on Renault Megane 1.4 coupe (R)?

When I indicate to turn left, it clicks a few times then stops, and odd things happen to the rear lights and brake lights, which flash in sympathy with the indicator! When I use the brake pedal, the brake lights and indicator light all come on. With the rear lights on, the yellow left hand rear indicator bulb glows dimly. I only realised this when a following motorist pointed it out.
Where do I start looking for the (presumed) electrical problem? Do I need to strip down the control stalk by the steering wheel, or is a wire chafing somewhere?
Thanks for any hints.

SUCCESS ! Before buying a replacement stalk control switch (about £25), I looked at the rear light cluster, and there's a cable connector with about 10 wires going into it. I pulled and pushed on this while the left side indicator and lights were both on, and they both went back to normal again. The indicator bulb became much brighter, and the rear lights stopped flashing in sympathy with it. I guess there was some connection problem inside the connector. It's going fine now, but this could be an intermittent fault. Hope this helps others with strange light problems on their Megane.

Thanks for the reply. Can you be more specific about the earth connection in the rear light cluster? I'm not sure what to check. Thanks for any help. At the moment I'm a menace on the dark roads. Following cars have no idea what my signals mean! Brake lights flashing on and off!

not sure if this is correct but hope it helps as I have the same problem but check the earth in the light cluster. It seems to have sorted this problem on another forum.
