replace broken recliner pull handle?

I bought a used chair-and-a-half recliner. It has a hidden pull handle between the chair cushion and the arm. The handle is broken and without it the chair does not seem to recline. It looks like the handle could be easily replaced, but I'm not even sure what to call it or where to look - my web searches have not been very productive.

Does anyone know the name of the handle or how I might replace it?

Here are a couple links to videos showing how to determine the correct recliner handle or cable you need to do a repair and how to replace a broken recliner handle or cable

"D-RING PARACHUTE STYLE REPLACEMENT RECLINER RELEASE HANDLE LONG CABLE AND SPRING END"
This is the one our recliner required. The handle pulled off of the cable. There are different types... some say long and some say short. We could tell which we needed by looking at the attachment that screws the cable back on to the chair. Ours was square with six holes in it. The other choice was oval. Amazon had 19 of the one we needed for $22 plus abour $5 shipping in May 2012. They had the other one also. My husband unscrewed the cable from between the seat and the arm of our recliner. I found all of this by using google. Just google the words in italics above. Google then showed Howtomendit.com

look under the foot rest for the chair law tag or mfg name if you can find the company name Google search for a contact call or email them you may need to send them a photo of the chair so they can get the right style cable then ask for the hidden pull cable for that chair it will probably cost 20 to 30 dollars plus shipping just beware there are a lot of different lengths of cables so one size does not fit all, to make sure you get the right size take the cable off or turn the chair over so the mechanism is up and measure the exposed metal cable from the plastic cover to the end of the exposed cable this should give you the right size pull cord

Take small phillip screwdriver remove the handle cover screws on the outside of the recliner chair. There should be 2 screws holding it on. Now, flip the chair upside down exposing the cable itself where it leaves the handle and snakes its way around the front of the chair (under it) and find the clip it uses to stop itself on the chair. The clip should be compression style fitting into and through the steel frame itself. Remove the clip from the frame CAREFULLY try not to damage the clip because the cable itself may NOT need replaced and you will need to use it again or buy new one online for 29.00. Now, once you have slack in the cable you can then easily remove the end of the cable from the mechanism at the end. This will allow you to remove the CABLE, HANDLE and the clip to be taken out and looked over to see what is defective.
I repaired my handle (because that was the part that the cable slipped through due to breaking) by taking a small sheet metal screw and small drill bit and drilling a pilot hole next to the stopper on the handle mechanism-then screwing in the small screw NEXT to the cable end not allowing it to move whatsoever. This allowed me to repair the handle without buying another cheap OEM handle that would eventually (probably) break again anyway.
End result? Works like a dream! GOOD LUCK and it is not as hard as it looks.

FYI. Franklin furniture recliner parts are under warranty for the lifetime of the product according to the literature I have from them. The parts, including shipping, are free. I purchased my Franklin recliner sofa from City Furniture and ordered a replacement parachute pull cable through them from Franklin. I plan to install the cable myself since it is a very easy repair once the sofa is laid on its back or front.

I just found the telephone number for Klausner/Stylecraft and called them about the exact same thing... their number is 712-338-4727, ask for the parts department. I explained to the receptionist what I needed and that Sofa Express went out of business and she transferred me to parts.

I had the same problem!! A friend told me about a company called *All Furniture Services* and said they were absolutly amazing. They repaired some of her furniture that had been damaged during a move. They were very professional and helpful. The pricing was very reasonable! I would highly recommend them!

My husband took pictures of our broken lever handle on our reclining chair and sent it to www.jmupholstery.com. The person he dealt with named Jeff was extremely prompt with his reply. We sent him a check and he sent the exact handle we needed right back. The whole transaction took 7 days. I would highly recommend dealing with this company.

I was successful in getting replacement parachute type recliner pulls from the furniture store where I purchased the furniture. I had two pulls snap between the handle and the end of the cable. Mealey's furniture was kind enough to send me two replacements (free of charge), since I purchased the recliner there (by the way, the furniture manufacturer is Lane Furniture). Hope this helps.

The best place I found that had one was JM upholstery in England, but I could only reach them by snail mail.
But isn't that the worst design ever!

I have been looking for the same thing. Try ebay and search keyword "RECLINER RELEASE PULL TYPE PARACHUTE HANDLE REPAIR PART". There are two types, with different tips that attach to chair. This is the closest thing I've found. Or you can take it to an upholstery shop and they can order a new one for you. The one on ebay costs $29.99

Hello Louise,

Although the broken part on my couch is brown, the number s-1427 is the same. Obviously this part is badly designed right from the start. There is way to much tension on the spring which just happens to be at the parts weakest point. This is the point where the pivot pole is located. There is only about one-eight inch of plastic on the top part of this piece. Now that I am looking at it I'm surprised it lasted as long as it did. I also can not find any furniture parts place willing to help locate this part. Ovbiously they would rather sell you an new couch. I suppose one might go to dumps and search for an abandoned recliner or perhaps one of them may fall off the back of a pickup truck in the middle of the road. Ha, ha. I'm going to take this little piece of junk into my shop and see if I can manufacture some sort of brace using aluminum and 4-40 thread screws and tap into the plastic. There is not much room for this as the exixting part is so thin and cheaply made. The only other alternitive I can see is to take a thick piece of metal and slip it into the hole on the side of the couch for a brace and connnect the pin from the pull wire inside of a wooden handle and use it to pull the footrest open. Kind of like starting a lawn mower with a pull rope.

I am in the exact same boat - except it is my reclining love seat and BOTH the pulls broke. The store I bought my furniture from does not repair their furniture after it is one year old - plus I bought it on clearance so they said it didn't matter they wouldn' t fix it anyway - I bought it "as is." We can open them if we tip it back and pull out the footrest. it is a pain because as a regular loveseat it is not all that comfortable. I will continue to search and I promise I will post if I find a solution.

Hi Stephanie,

I have the exact same problem and have not yet found a solution. My sofa has an inside pull lever. It is black and has S-1247 on it. I know I can replace it easily but can't find where to get one. We bought the sofa from a shop that has since gone out of business. I went to 3 big furniture stores today and no one could help me. So far the only online info I have been able to find is your question. Please let me know if you have found a solution.
