speedo?

I have a ford cougar 2.5 V6 1998,the speedo suddenly stopped working and my traction control warning light now stays on,although it is not clocking up any miles on the odometer ,i would much rather have the speedo working as it should.i have checked the fuses but they all seem ok ,any ideas as to why it won't work.

ps . it does flicker into life on the odd occasion ,but only for about 2 seconds ,then it's gone again.

Both of these items on this car work from an electronic speed pulse. It is usually located near the rear of the gearbox check you don't have any loose wires there, if it can't sense the pulse from this sensor neither the speedo or ElecTraction Control will work as the car thinks that it isn't moving.....

Guess that would be the first place to check.
