Bosch Extraxx rollers not running - STEP BY STEP GUIDE

The fault could be one of many and the following will guide you to step by step resolving the issue.
If you can hear/feel the vibration the motor in the pick up roller section spinning then the chances are that it is the belt that has broken. If not, it could be a jammed up roller or another fault as described later.

You cannot normally see the belt by visual inspection because it is shielded by the cover. (Unless it has snapped and happens to be lying on the floor!)
If it turns but with some resistance, then the chances are the belt is OK.

After unplugging the machine.

You will need to remove the 12 screws that hold the bottom plate to the main body of the pick up assembly. 4 large Phillips screws behind the roller in a line and 8 others shorter thinner ones around the outside.
Remove the cover plate – If the belt is broken and the motor turns freely then replace the belt.

The roller assembly can be removed. Make sure it is not clogged up with carpet thread etc.

You will then have access to the roller motor. There are 2 wires to it, simply live and neutral. The black wire being the live.

If you are not confident/competent with dealing with electricity at this point put the whole lot is a box and take it to someone who is! I accept no responsibility for anyone who gets electrocuted from following my solution. (tell you family that before you continue :) )

Carefully remove the wire, and using a 240volt test screwdriver, plug in and turn the cleaner on, making sure the pick up assembly is not in vertical mode (Which turns off a microswitch cutting power to the roller motor) see if there is power to the motor.

If there is power then it’s one of two options, either the neutral wire is broken or the motor is defective.

Unplug the machine.

You may wish to test the motor at this stage by connecting it to a power source to see if it runs, if it does, then the fault is still within the wiring, if it doesn’t, you have found the fault. Replace the motor.
If this is not the motor, then you will need to disassemble the pick up assembly.

On either side of the assembly there is a cover plate, there is a small hole in the plate where a locking pin holds the plate in situ, press the pin in and slide off. There is then a round ended rectangular plate which was normally trapped between the main body of the pick up and the lower plates which slides out.
Repeat for the other side.

You should now be able to see the 2 wires (Blue and Black) which go from the roller motor to the main body of the machine. They are shielded by a rubber shroud to protect them from chaffing. I suggest to slide the shroud away to examine them as when I checked mine one had broke and the other was about to. If yours are the same then you have found the fault so continue. If they are both intact the fault could still be in the main body. The wire(s) on mine needed to be replaced and therefore stripping further down was required.

On the under side of the pick up assembly, on ether side of the machine is a U shaped bracket, held in by 2 phillips screws which should be removed. These are not interchangeable to ensure you know which is which
The pick up assembly can now be removed from the main body.

To gain access to the main body you will see 2 white plastic rings which acted as bearings for the pick up and allowed the pick up to swivel. There is a Phillips screw accessible on the circumference which must be removed. This is a short chrome coloured one, unlike the others. With this removed the white ring must be prized off carefully away from the body. It only clips in but requires a bit of an effort to remove it. I inserted the blade of a screwdriver under the lip if where the retaining screw was and levered it against the main body in the centre of where the ring enclosed, as it started to lift I jammed a smaller screwdriver under the ring and slowly prised it away.

Repeat for the other side

There are a total of 6 phillips screws holding the 2 halves of the main body together. 4 are obvious on the main body, 2 on the top and 2 below. The other 2 are craftily hidden on the ends, access to them was covered by the white bearing rings you just removed.
Once you remove these the halves will spring apart as there is a spring in either end which acts on a plastic peg which normally holds the hover locked upright.
You will now have access to the micro switch and more wires.

It is worth mentioning that the micro switch could be at fault so carefully connecting the electrics up and shorting out the microswitch will test this. By default, if the switch is pressed in, it cuts the power to the roller motor and the pick up assembly ensures that this happens when in the upright position.

You are now in a position to replace the faulty wiring if that was the cause or delve even further in. As the fault with mine was the wiring, I replaced it.

Assembly is the reverse of the above. Make sure the wires are located in the grooves or they will become trapped when you re assemble and if you disturb the main motor make sure you correctly position it so the pick up port is in line.

The 2 halves should fit easily together, the only resistance being the 2 springs.

I hope this is of help and if you resolved your problem and didn’t electrocute yourself well done!

bala remove all screws at the top of the handle down to the start of the metal including screw behind the accessory holder that will pop out with aid of a screw driver. Then you can get to the screw that is at the very top and will allow the hand grip to come appart although the lower section is held on with a zip tie, but should now see the switch and from the in side a screwdriver will pop the switch out. Then its a case of a soldering iron to remove the switch. My switch has just burnt out so just need to order a new switch but not sure what made it burn out ??

its pretty easy to take apart - just keep removing screws and it all comes off. The belt goes on easy

Only problem - I'm on my second belt and it just broke. Perhaps a design flaw!@!

When mine stopped I replaced the broken wiring to the agitator motor, no problem

same problem here..........though the rollers brush will kick in when pushed with fingers and handle held at a certain almost upright angle...but too frustrating too use this way!!!!!!

david wiseby, May 2008
It is probably snapped drive belt. mine's broken and I am trying to source the belt.
