WHY WON'T MY CLIO START?

I have a 1994 M reg 1.4RT Renault Clio - it is turning over but will not start. I have changed distributor cap, rotary arm and ht leads but still nothing. I have tested to see if there is a spark going to the spark plugs but no spark being generated when touching metal and turning engine over. Any ideas? Could it be the ignition coil?

sorry Paul the keys were not chip coded until about 97 on the clios and if its a 1.4 rt the key would have a remote plimp for the central locking if this opens the central locking then it is not the key as it has sent a code and has been excepted by the computer. it is more likely to be the timing pick up sensor on the gear box. remove and fit new one.

im not sure if this is the same problem but my clio did a similar thing, except it didnt make a noise when i turned the key, id have to wait 15 minutes before it wud start. My mechanic sanded something down on the ignition coil and its never done it since,

If the red light on the instrument panel is flashing when you turn on the ignition, then you almost certainly need to replace your key - it has the chip for the immobiliser within it.
