How do I open my Kenmore Whispertone 12 amp, model 146?

The vacuum has lost most of the suction. Replaced bag and checked for blockage. I am trying to get to the motor but the cover is stuck on one end. Once I get it open how do I fix it?

Trisha, disregard my message as I was trying to get to the motor, not the beater head to replace the belt. (I have already done that. To get to the belt you need to pop off the cover over the light and there are two screws that need to be removed, then on the underside remove the bar on the back that folds out. You just pop it off, then it will come open. Good luck.

I got the lid off by prying off the cord release button from the back side of the vacuum with a screwdriver. I thought it was going to break from the sound of it but it came off with no damage. Can't guarantee that it won't break if you do the same thing, but I got the suggestion from this forum. There was not any kind of release mechanism. Once I got it off, I examined the motor and connections but couldn't find any obvious problem that would cause the poor suction so I am taking it in for repair.

I've been searching the web for help with that exact question. My wispertone needs the belt replaced, but I can't get the power head open and I can't find the owner's manual. I saw this same question posed on a simular forum, and the only suggestion offered was to find a release clip. But, I haven't been able to locate one yet. So, lets make a deal...if either one of us finds out "how to mend it"....please post it here.
Thanks and good luck.
