How can I fix a "CALL FOR SERVICE 3" on a Panasonic KX-FL501?

I have an old Panasonic KX-FL501 fax machine. Yesterday it stopped working and shows a "CALL FOR SERVICE 3" on the display. I called service and they want me to take it 35 miles away and pay $50 to see what the problem is. I don't think the unit is worth $50. Any help is greatly appreciated.
