How can I take apart my Kenmore vacuum model # 116 31312100?

I am trying to replace the on/off switch on my vacuum and am not sure how to take the handle apart.
Cathy Marin, February 2007
The switch is not in the handle itself, this vacuum uses a push rod inside the handle to actuate the switch. The switch is in the top portion of the body.

0. UNPLUG VACUUM AND WRAP ELECTRICAL TAPE AROUND THE PLUG, so it can't be plugged in untill you are finished.
1. Remove and discard dust bag (not reusable, type U bag)
2. Turn vacuum over and remove the screw just below the cord holder.
3. Turn vacuum over and tap handle towards back of vacuum, the handle assembly will slide off towards the back.
4. Remove the two screws at the top of bag compartment and slide cover off towards front of vacuum.
5. Remove hold down screw and lift switch upward to remove.
6. Switch part numbers and ratings on side of switch.

REPLACE ONLY WITH THE EQUIVALENT STYLE AND RATING OF SWITCH TO AVOID RISK OF FIRE OR INJURY!!

To reassemble:

Start with number 5 and work your way back to 0

If you are not comfortable following directions pay the vacuum repairman his $55 to do it for you.
