what is this snow flake button on a astra 1.4 auto box?

what is this button on my friends car he has asked me what it is for he doesn't have air-con but it is by the gear selector it looks like a snow flake it is on 94-95 M auto transmision on the astra

it is used when there are severe icy conditions and when you turn it on it will turn to third gear and help the car keep in control.

It's the Winter setting. One uses it when road conditions are slippery e.g. ice or wet leaves. It pulls away in a higher gear and does not allow the engine to rev to much, thus avoiding wheelspin.
