Maybe an intermittent fault on hot water microswitch? (boiler thinks that there is hot water demand, but diverter valve is in central heasting demand position, so radiators get/stay hot).
Does turning down the domestic hot water temperature (on the boiler controls when it is fired up wrongly) turn down the flame, or does turning down the central heating temperature modulate the flame during this condition?.
If the first case then it may be the microswitch, if the second maybe the timer itself is faulty?.
