Why does my MSN Messenger keep freezing up ?

Why does my MSN Messenger freeze as soon as I try to send a msg to a contact ? I can use the Internet fine, but, as soon as I log into MSN Messenger and try to msg someone, my whole screen freezes. I can STILL use the Internet, but, MSN Messenger is FROZEN. I am using a Sony Vaio laptop ( VGN-A150 ) with Windows XP.

I believe MSN is purposely playing games. They've been "freezing" my recipe's and any follow up to reading stories. I believe they want you to call for HELP and then they're always trying to SELL some technician service. Maybe, we will all get lucky and the Microsoft main service will discover their scheme.
I am seriously considering dropping them. I tried to ALERT MICROSOFT, but I believe they're completely taken over by the MSN technicians and are no longer operating as the original Microsoft. That's my take. I just grin and bear it and refuse to fall for their schemes to get you to call and pay for technical help. They're suppose to help us because we pay for the service, but they've invented "new" pays to make more green. Can't FIX...GREED!!!

i tried that registry key. it wouldnt work. i didn't know what exactly to change so i changed the value data, i think it's wrong. so now i lost my value data. i need help. i can't talk to anyone on my msn messenger.

Hey thanks !

I tried the registry key solution and works fine! thank you so much !

It happens to alot of people, its because Windows has updated msn, and its a complete failure, you cant even do single webcams anymore, you only view webcams via video call, and can only do one vid call at a time so you can only go onto cam for one person and vice versa. Windows really need to sort themselves out

Mr Mercury, July 2010
I found someone that encountered the solution. Since MSN is related to IE family, they share some keys on the registry. Seems like some keys that point to some slow sites are the culprits of this hanging.
Just go to start-run type regedit and click ok
Go to this key
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\MAIN]
and edit the following values as shown
"Start Page"="about:blank"
"Default_Page_URL"="about:blank"
"Default_Search_URL"="about:blank"
"Search Page"="about:blank"
Close regedit and restart.

Hope it works for you like it did to me and others.

regards

i dont have anything else open when i have msn running and not even a contact window and it still crashes is there a step by step round this problem plz let me know

I have exactly the same problem with msn under vista HP, but if i go to Ubuntu 9.1 Karmic Koala, and use aMSN, it works just perfect, i can even use webcam without any problem... The original Live Messenger works worse than it's GPL clone... LoL... What are those guys doing in Microsoft earning big bucks and keep releasing low quality untested software.

Get rid of windows... and try any of LINUX release Ubuntu, Fedora, RedHat... you will be amazed how fast they are with exactly the same RAM and CPU.

im haveing the same problem on my pc and i dont think its ram or processing related because i used too use internet youtube world of warcraft and msn at the same time now i just use facebook and msn and it dies for me i think its micosoft fault

My msn is doing the exact same thing. I have a sony vaio as well, though I've only had it for a little over a month. I have the new 9.0 messenger and msn was working fine until randomly it froze. I tried to do task manager, but it didn't work at all. Actually, I've not been able to use that at any time. But I tried closing out of msn myself, and that was when everything else froze, so I was forced to shut the computer down by pressing the power button. At first I didn't think anything of it, sometimes computers just freeze, but it kept doing it. ONLY when I was running msn. If I don't run it, everything is fine. I've done quite a few virus scans, tune up, whatever else. It's obviously something to do with msn. If you've found anything out, please email me at: taintedxbyxlove It doesn't allow me to put my email address, but it's at hotmail.com I would really appreciate it.

Yeah some sessions my msn will be fine, others i'll have to log in 6 or 7 times before i can get it to run smoothly without freezing within minutes of my login.

It lasts for a minute or so, then stops responding, screen goes white if i click it etc. Also my laptop makes a whirring sound haha, not sure if that's related. But as i say generally this only happens at first then after i keep relentlessly exiting and starting it up again eventually it'll work and then the problem won't arise again.

Any ideas here as ive tried all sorts of fixes involving regedits etc, and nothing has worked =[

Remove any installed programming software like:
SweetIM, Smiley Central, etc... from your tool-bar. I don't know how to remove programming software but i'm sure if you Google you will find an answer. I'm having the same difficulty too. I contacted SweetIM just now about mine and i'm waiting for a reply.
That' the best I can do for now.

OKAY WELL my msn is ExileCU AT hotmail.com if yur havin problems and need help, my answer to this is download: cc cleaner , DO NOT DOWNLOAD ANY OTHER REGISTRY CLEANERS AS THEY ARE MOSTLY FAKE, run the program and then restart your computer, if not good then make a new user account and try on that, the new msn has some registry mix up with the dll of win32 so its like a freeze and the system dont detect it because the registry is not even on the list as it is hideing under the registry of win32 files ok :) hope this helps

same thing is happinin 2 me and its sooooo annoying

We cant all be doing it wrong, it must be MSN fault .They need to go and see what is wrong with the site cause some thing is.

Marilyn, February 2009
Yup same here and i have plenty of ram 4gig and its only recently it happens since new version was released?

Jay, January 2009
Same friggin' thing happens to me. I don't know how to fix it, but re-installing msn does NOT help.

I also have a Sony VAIO PCV-RS420 and Messenger freezes the whole system when login, especially if I put the mouse over the MSN window.
I have tried every trick published, and they work a couple of weeks, then the problem returns.

im running vista, and as far as i know, it has nothing to do with other programs running in the background, it might freeze because u do not have enough ram, but when its sitting there, and freezes up...thats just the program it self, nothing else effects it. i have 4gb ram, run windows live messenger alone, and it freezes! ive seen this on other pc's. my pc is acer.

Nicco, August 2008
hello there my name is kenny my msn keeps freezing up all the time....i think it is to do with the server....sometimes they just can't respond fast enough...thats why it is good to have diffrent type messengers such as aim/yahoo and so forth... but also running alot of programs at once will cause it to....to me yahoo messenger is the best i hardly ever have problems with yahoo mostly only msn.....

bahamas boy...., August 2008
It is not from having too many programs running...as my msn is doing this lately too and I an running nothing else. As soon as I msn a person it freezes up. Everything else is working fine. This has been going on for a week now.

Kimberley, May 2008
Nope.. It Happens To Me Too.. And I'm using Emachines Pc.. ?

Any Help?

Israar.., February 2008
2gb RAM and nothing else running in the background, now you tell me if thats the cause ? :P really this is freezing up it just locks MSN no matter what version i use.

Mr X, September 2007
Yah, my messenger freezes all the time, too, and i also have a Sony Vaio (VGN-FS740/W), and i'm not running a lot of programs, just the msgr, and it keeps freezing up... i thought it was due to the amount of contacts i have (160+) but... maybe it's something related to vaio computers, dunno

Fernando R, July 2007
To many programs running? Or not enough ram.
