Every time I start sewing the needle sticks but the motor continues running. I have an old Kenmore and a new model Singer and for a while I thought the problem was the machines fault but both machines have developed the same issue so I know it's my fault. I notice that while sewing the tread wraps its self around the bobbin case holder in the bottom. I am not sure if that's normal but it tangles up and then the machines malfunction. What can I do? Do they just need tuneups?
Either you have the needle in the wrong way round which is very common, or you have not threaded the top or bottom up correctly, you may have the bobbin in the wrong way round, the tensions may not be set properly.

Make sure the needle is the correct way round, most common fault, make sure the bobbin in the holder the correct way round, make sure you have the correct tension top and bottom,
it the thread knotting up underneath ?
