The steering rack gaiter can be removed / installed over the track rod. You have to remove the rod end first. Any steering fluid in the gaiter means the power steering rack is U/S and that will need to be replaced. Be careful not to get dirt in the new gaiter as this will cause wear in the rack and track rod.
A new gaiter can be bought for £10 from main dealers.
