clutch change 1995 astra 1.7 td does this require gearbox removal?

does it require removal of gearbox or can i do it through the bottom plate on the gearbox
steve cook, March 2007
I am just in the middle of changing a 95 1.6 petrol, and it is similar, but to release the layshaft there is a recessed circlip down the emd of the shaft, which must be removed. Then screw in a M7 bolt or easy-out into the hole and pull back the shaft. To get the clutch assy. to drop out, however, I had to loosen the bellhousing bolts and gearbox mountingd to enable the box to be pulled back about 1 1/2 inches, then it dropped out with ease.

you take the end plate off the end of the gearbox where the shaft can be pulled out once the bolt has been removed, then you will need to push clutch pedal in and use clamps on the clutch, (available at parts shops) undo the bolts and it will drop out through the cover plate on the bottom of the bell housing.
