Just want to pass along some info.:

My Xerox XRX 8X Shreader has been known to turn itself on. It seems that if is located near a window, and sunlight hits it a certain way, it'll go on. Is there a photocell as part of the safety mechanism that's doing this?

Mine sometimes comes on in the middle of the night when there is no light, waking me up. Can't say I know why, but I used to think that it has something to do with pieces of sticky paper residue (from envelop glue, etc), in the cutting teeth, that trick the machine into thinking that a sheet of paper is being inserted. That said, why would it just come on at random, and not all the time? Same question, whether it's from the light or paper residue.

yes, in auto mode a photosensor detects your inserted paper . if you have the machine in direct sun this sensor can be fooled into thinking the sunlight hitting it is a piece of paper and turns itself on.
