Hi, can someone please please help me? I've got a 2005 Focus and the battery was getting low on the key fob so I replaced the battery. The key didin't work at all so I followed your steps to reset it and I'm getting both the first beep (after 4 turns) and the second (when I press a button) but the key still won't work. It's driving me mad!! I've tried waiting for 10 seconds to laps before trying the doors and I've tried turning the key to position 2 but still no joy. I would be realy gratefull for any help on this. Thanks

mark, February 2013
My 2000 SOHC Focus will start once a day. After that it's a roll of the dice. It starts when it is cool (under 50), but the problem is much in hot weather. It started all winter. This problem reared it's head last fall, and now that it's summer, it is back. The only noise I hear when I turn the key is the noise of the fuel pump. No clicks from the solenoid or the click click click that you hear when you have a bad battery. Occasionally, I have been able to jump start it, but only from my truck. Other vehicles just don't seem to be able to, and I have tried. When I can't get it to start, the only answer is to leave it to sit several hours (over night) and it will start when I come back to it. I have had the alternator, battery, and starter all tested at the local auto parts store

ben, January 2013
WOW!!! That absolutely worked, I thank you soooooo much. I have gone without this for 3 months as I thought I would have to do that special fuse deal. I wonder how many people they rip off with this simple solution? Thanks again, Jim

Jim, October 2012
Well, what can I say. I was very sceptical when I read this and just couldn't believe it would be so simple. I have a 2002 Focus. I got in, tried it and it worked. It took about 30 seconds.
Thank you for saving me hundreds of pounds in Ford charges. I am very grateful.

Kathy Davies, October 2012
I have a 2001 Tdci (the alarm and locking system is the one with 5 plugs) and tried this method but it won't work.
The battery is new.
After i turn the ignition 4 times i get the alert sound, but the LED flashes instead of staying on, and pressing the buttons on the remote won't do anything!
Please help.

Cristian, June 2012

russ harris, June 2012

Rothon, June 2012
I got a 2001 (51 plate) ford focus and it come with 2 keys i couldn't lock it coz the main key only worked on the iggy. tried the obvious one which was
1. Insert a key and turn it to position 2 (dashboard lights come on BUT do not start car!!!) four times in 6 seconds
2. Switch off the ignition - a tone should sound to indicate it is now possible to program keys
3. Press any button on key - a tone should sound as confirmation
4. Repeat step 3 for ALL keys
5. Switch ignition to position 2 OR wait for 10 seconds to elapse after last key programming

but i didnt not hear any tone??

anyone no what it could be??

liam, June 2012
I have a ford focus c-max, just tried this sequence and it works perfectly.
Thank you very much

Terry Bailey, April 2012
Hi. I have just purchased 2000 focus and key fob only works to manually open passenger door. It starts the car fine. It is a blue chip key but only has one button on it. Have tried this sequence and do not get a chime at all after 4 turns and when taking key out led still flashes as normal - any ideas?

Dale, April 2012
Many thanks for this - I had a blonde moment and put my wife's keys through the wash :-( and this knackered the remote locking. Bought a replacement fob from t'internet for £30 and put existing blade into that, but then I mucked up the immobiliser by starting the engine :-( :-(. Sorted that by putting original immobiliser back on (so I ended up with original blade and battery holding side of key fob and replacement side of key fob with circuit board in) and then followed the 4 turns in 6 seconds>>beep>>press unlock button>>beep... job done, thank you very much for saving me from the continued wrath of my wife and the extortionate prices at the local Ford dealership :-)
BTW this was for an 07 Focus Zetec

Jez Ellis, April 2012

what the guy said worked perfect for me (focus 1999) :1.
5. Switch ignition to position 2 OR wait for 10 seconds to elapse after last key programming

steve mance, April 2011
Thanks a million, greatly appreciated, saved me £65.
Car: Focus, Ghia, 07.

It wasn't exactly as described... but nevertheless worked.

In my case after turning the key 4 times, there was no light or signal, so I just pressed a button (the open unlock one), then it made a bip an done, they key was now working.

Then I had to do it again, because out of the excitement I did not activate the second key, so I missed the window :)

Dima, March 2011
Ford Focus 1998 Ghia. Key was unlocking manually, but buttons were broke. Opened key, new battery, soldered on switch and followed the instructions above.

Works a treat.

Thanks for this

Richard, March 2011
I have a 2007 Focus with the three button remote fob - fob got damaged and would no longer work so I:
1. Purchased a second hand replacement fob on eBay for £19 (ensure you get the one corresponding to the fob code, think there are 3 possible types, my code was 2s6t15k601AB)
2. Programme the fob as per instructions below (on/off 4times & press one of the buttons on fob after beep). Worked a treat.
3. Now I needed to sort the immobiliser - as per below, when you take the key fob apart it splits into 3 pieces. I kept the old key(obviously) and reassembled the key fob using the battery side from the old key as this is where the immobiliser resides, and clipped this into the new fob where the chips reside and it worked first time!

Thanks to all for the posts below -

Rob, Dublin.

Robert, March 2011
Worked 08 Focus Zetec.
Insert key to 0. Turn to II and back to 0 four times. Dash beeps and then push open door button. Done.

SUWass, February 2011
Thank you so much. We tried the fix that was detailed in the first post and it worked first time. We have a Ford Focus 51 plate. You have saved us the cost of reprogramming the key. I am just waiting for Fords to call me back to give me advice and found this on the internet. It will be interesting to see if they suggest this remedy.

J Jones, February 2011
My battery had died and I finally had it replaced a month later - when I tried to reprogram it following the directions in my book and from the answers below I got nothing..so instead of the 4 times I tried the 8 rep - when I got to 7 cycles of the keys my doors locked and then unlocked - so I went one too many times -long story short..I had to cycle 7 times till the doors lock/unlock (in 2 position)- then push any button on the remote (doors will lock and unlock once more) - then return to off and remove keys...it finally works again!! This was a 2008 Ford focus SE by the way...

Paul, August 2010
The elecronics seemed to be the part that was not working on the old key so I reassembled the key using the old battery compartment but with the new electronics and buttons part - works a treat as the battery compartment contains the immobiliser which I couldn't remove!! Thank you so much to the forum, your combined answers saved me £130 (quoted £180 from a dealer), paid £50 for a replacement controller.

Victoria Newby, August 2010
in responce to JAY the immobiliser glass tube just slides in and out, you just need to grip it on the protuding end and pull it out. If it does not protrude enough then you can push it out a bit by inserting a stanly blade or similar into the rubber housing at the other end of the tube and gently pushining it out

Nudge, July 2010
Fantastic! I have a C-Max 1.8 (53) and it worked without fuss. I sat in car with door open and it was all done first time in like 8 seconds.

Go to first post by the genius and thank the lord for the £50 saving.

Brand0, July 2010
for this to work do the doors have to be closed?

jay, July 2010
I had a similar problem to most on here and was being quoted rediculous prices for a replacement key so I went onto ebay and picked up a second hand one for about £10. I placed the blade from the old key onto the new one and followed the instructions as layed out here and it worked :) Problem was that although the central locking was working, when my partner went out the next day to start the car, doors opened fine but the car was immobilised. After much head scratching and further research on the web I noticed that the old key had an additional part, a small glass like bulb on the lower part of the disassembled key ( running down the side and extruding slightly. there was a space on the new key to accomodate such a device but I was damned if I could remove it from the old one. This little device I have since found out works with the ignition system and if not present will immobilise the engine when you try to start. A means of preventing key duplication. Then it struck me, the key splits into three parts, the blade, the lower part containing the battery and immobiliser device and the third part containing the door opening electronics and buttons. The final part, the elecronics seemed to be the part that was not working on the old key so I reassembled the key using the old blade, the old battery compartment but the new electronics and buttons, which I already knew were working.

To my relief it worked perfectly. The new electronic part worked on the central locking and becuase the immobiliser device was in place, the car now started too :)

Adam, May 2010
My key suddenly stopped working last week (X-reg 1.8L Diesel). Tried changing the battery - still didn't work. Found & followed Ray's instructions and bingo!! - key working again. Many thanks, Ray. Only question now is: why did the key stop working after nine years??

Dave S, May 2010
On the key fob, if you look inside the battery area you will see two contact springs. Some times one of the springs can be forced away from the copper contact point on the little CPU. To over come this close the case of the fob a jar so you can see if the springs line up, then gently bend to shape again NOTE: very fragile so be careful.

Sid, April 2010

Maria C., January 2010
oh my god. 51reg 1.6 focus... i think i love you guys!

Jenn, January 2010
Guys just so you know, this works on my Ford Focus 1.6 08 (2008) Zetec. I had also had sudden loss of control from the keyfob (think cold weather snap could be involved...). I should point out though I'm not sure if the terminology being used for positions is right. Anyway I assumed that just key straight in was position 0, then you have position 1 then 2 (with 3 being starting the ignition) and I was trying between 1 and 2 with no luck. Then I tried what I would call position 0 to 1 on and off quickly in succession, thought it didn't do anything but then i pressed the door open button on keyfob and got a response beep from the dash. Waited 20 seconds then put key in ignition to check there were no probs, took out again, tried door unlock and lock buttons on keyfob and all was back to normal. Thanks very much for the tips guys.

For anyone still unclear, certainly on this Ford Focus 2008 (new model) what worked was flicking between the position where you've only just inserted the key (no turns yet) and the first notch that you can turn to.

sa ib, November 2009
My key fob radio control central locking stopped working suddenly on my 2002 2.0 Ford Focus - central locking still worked fine using the key manually in the lock, so it wasn't the secretive fuse no. 63 (a failure of which can cause central locking to fail completely).

I tried replacing the battery in the key, and removing the connections from the radio receiver in the driver's foot well (had heard this can remove static build-up which can cause a problem). None of this worked.

I did to this to re-program the key: turn key to position 1 in the ignition and then turn it to position 2 and back to position 1, 4 times in 6 seconds, the 'lights on' chime will sound, and the car immobiliser LED (above the clock) will stay on, then take the key out of the ignition and press one of the buttons on the fob. Wait 10 or so seconds. This worked.

The manual that came with the car specified a different sequence to this which didn't work. Thanks to this forum I have got round a major headache - thanks again for all the help and advice!

Just tried your re-programming suggestion and am ever so grateful as I am expecting a new baby and was in dread when i saw the £103 reprogramming issue!
Did not work at first but i neglected to read the part about waiting 10 seconds for the programming to realise!
Thanks a bunch eternally grateful!

Have a browse of this site that I came across refered to in Honest John's forum that covers different types of keys and immobilisers and how to programme the key fobs for remote locking and starting.

i read somewhere else that you turn it on (position 2) and off 4 times quickly listen for the chime then remove the key and press lock then unlock button on the key as opposed to just 1 button then it should chime again if successful.

Wow, thanks so much. I live in Spain and Ford just tried to charge me 50 quid for a new one. Tried this and it works.(took 2 goes.
It's still a little weak so there might be a problem but at least it's working again.
It's such a huge chore having to put the key in the door and turn it!
Thank you thank you.

I have a different procedure to ray so we may be using different years. So if rays way don't work could you tell us what year and engine size the focus is.

jason, March 2007
You will need to reprogram ALL your existing keys so get them all ready and in the car with you!!! You can program up to a maximum of 4 keys.
