How can I fix Microsoft Media Player 11?

I have been using media player 11 since it came out. One of my computers is not connected to the internet. I connected it yesterday to the internet to download updates. Today, when I tried to open media player, my virus scanner popped up with the message VirusScan Alert! Detected as bo:stack. I tried again and again, but it still won't open. The virus scanner (Mccafee) keeps blocking the program from opening. So I uninstalled media player and installed it again.
After I reinstalled it, Media player 11 opened up. However, after closing it and trying to reopen it, the virus scanner blocked it again. How do I get the media player to open up without the virus scanner blocking it? And is it safe to turn off the virus scanner to see if it works without it on?
