When driving along and I need to break a little light (*) comes on in my Fiat Punto, Why. What does this mean?

It could also just be that you've got a brake light out, does the light say STOP in little letters? If it does that's all it is. Scared the bejesus out of me first time it happened mind!

This could be a number of things. The most likely are that either your brake fluid reservoir is low or that your brake pads are low.
For the fluid - just buy some DOT 4 brake fluid from a car place and top up left hand side under bonnet (with the wires on top)
A pad replacement is fairly cheap also, even cheaper if you do it yourself!
