Are you talking about the fan belt? Left hand side of the engine??

If so, you need to slacken off the alternaltor so that it drops slightly in order to replace the belt...

I would advise to replace the belt for a new one, sounds like it has been damaged, any good garage can provide, usually about 10-20 quid
