Sounds like you have air in your fuel system. This is a very common problem when you run out of fuel ( it's happened to me in a '94 Transit!). First re-fuel the van, then try to bleed it by pressing down the accelerator pedal to the floor whilst turning the ignition key, depending on what model of fuel pump you have this may work ( Ford put in 2 different types on transits. One of them self bleeds using the above method). If you find this does'nt work then you probably have the other type of fuel pump. But this again is very easy to fix. Re-fuel the van, then lift up the bonnet. Find the injectors( these are on top of the engine, they feed fuel to the engine. They have thin metal pipes connected to them). When you have located these, using a spanner loosen one a couple of turns, but not all the way out, and turn the ignition key with your accelerator pedal fully pressed down. Diesel should then flow out from the injector, then tighten the injector back up and clean up the fuel with a rag. Repeat this process for the remaining injectors. Hope this helps, all the best.
