Briggs and Stratton 375 Sprint engine speed in Rover mower?

While the engine runs and the mower will cut, there is little control over the engine speed which is slightly slow. The spark plug is near new and clean, the oil is new and the near-new green air filter has been washed, dried and re-oiled correctly. I read a lot here about idle screws, governors and springs but what do they look like and where are they? The two springs attached to the throttle cable lever beside the carby do not seem to affect anything because of long loops in the spring ends. Is there some kind of air vane or centrifugal gizmo involved? Is there a clear diagram anywhere on the net?

Hi

Any one know where I can get the engine manual for a B&S 375 sprint ?

Dave, July 2010
their is valve that the spring is attached to if you hook up your throttle cable direcly to that valve and you the spring to the engine (to pull the valve back when throttle is released)like me you have full control over the throttle those engine's on full throttle are quick and noisey

engine speed is governed by an air resistance cantilever which closes the throttle butterfly as the engine speeds up as air flow generated by the cooling fan acts upon it. the engine speed is set and non adjustable unless you shorten the return spring however this can have negative effects on your mower ie over revving/overheating.

none of those websites work, they all take you to the front page

On the B&S Sprint 375, the governor springs are located under the air filter canister. If you remove the canister (single screw on the top), you should have easy access.

To know what they look like, go to the following link:
http://www.briggsbits.co.uk/acatalog/copy_of_Quantum.html
The "idle governor spring" is the 12th item listed. The "throttle main governor spring" is immediately below it.

You can also download an engine operators manual (.pdf) and/or an illustrated parts list at:
http://www.briggsandstratton.com/display/router.asp?DocID=78498

Note: to download the docs, you'll need to know the engine model number first. Click here to find out where the model number is on your engine:

The other thing to check is that you have put new fuel in the engine - and you may even want to add a fuel stabiliser (the B&S product is called "Fuel Fit").

Hope this helps!
