Opening the bonnet on a Mk4 Escort?

I started getting an oil warning light on my Mk4 Escort (F Reg) so bought some oil but the bonnet release has stopped working. If you disconnect it under the steering column and pull it with pliers, there's resistance and doesn't feel like it's snapped but it won't pop the hood! I'm desparate to get it sorted quickly as I don't want to drive it with low oil and need it for work and a weekend's house hunting. Any help gratefully received!!!

under the steering coloumb there is a red lever. pull it and the bonnet should pop and then you need to go round to the front of the car and inter the bonnet, just right of the ford badge there is a small lever. lull it up and you sould be able to lift the bonnet.

Have someone press the bonnet down (where the catch is)as you pull on the cable.
