How can I get the rear drums off my Peugeot 306 1.4 XN '96?

I want to replace the handbrake cables and rear shoes but even with the h/brake cables detached at the hand brake and the h/brake levers stops pushed down behind the drum spines, the drums won't come out of the 'shoe groves'. Do I need to undo the allen bolt at the rear of the hub assy to solve this problem. (I havn't done this yet cos I haven't got one that big!)

Has anyone out there managed to release or rotate the self adjusting mechanism through one of the wheel bolt holes? Does anyone have a 'cunning plan'? HELP!!

Thanks Lee. Yep, the stub nut and washer are off. I wonder if it is possible to release the self adjusting mechanism or rotate the adjusting wheel by 'keyhole surgery' through a wheel nut hole?
