Wiring for a 95 Ford Escort Heater Blower Motor?

I replaced a blower motor in my escort. There is a hot and a ground wire which I connected but the blower did not turn on. I then attached the ground to the metal of the car which made it work but then it won't turn off or adjust the velocity (high or low). Is there something I missed?

It may be that the speed control resistor has open-circuited in your Escort. Nothing was wrong with the blower motor. By hot wiring the blower, you bypassed this device and lost speed control.
