Motor Stops in process of trying to start engine?

2001 Model - Troybilt Lawn Tractor - 17.5 HP Briggs & Stratton I/C OHV , Single Cylinder Engine

When I try to start the engine, its like it will turn over a little bit and all of a sudden it stops. Like maybe there is too much compression for the ignition system to start the mower.

( I have put a new battery, silenoid, & battery cable...none of this have helped the problem at all)

I can take my plug out and engine will turn over great, without the plug in. Once I put the plug back in, it will turn over atleast one good time.......sometimes it will even start up, but it wont last long..........almost acts as though its being flooded or something.

I was getting ready to buy a new starter......thought maybe it was going bad.But with it turning the engine over soo good without the Spark PLug being in, leads me to beleive that there is nothing wrong with my starter. Kinda thinking it maybe a Carburator problem (float sticking or something). But I am not sure. I am no small engine specialist by no means.........thats why I am asking and hoping for some guidence from some of you pros here.

Any ideas??

Thanks a million,

Could be a carb.problem but could also be the valves out of adjustment or even the timing being a little off.If its not "losing gas" between uses(less gas in it than when you parked it)I would bet you need valves adjusted-the ohv. models are kind of tempermental about that.
