Ford Mondeo Boot Lock?

When i press the button to open the boot of my 1997 mondeo hatchback , it opens the boot but there is a series of rat a tat tats like a machine gun going off. Everthing else works ok including the central locking button.

the central locking motor has failed mechanically. The drive gear has broken gear teeth.

Don't worry about the noise. When you do not hear it, you will have to use your key to open the boot!
