use a jewellers screwdriver or a sharp knife to pop the round plastic covers (they say GHD on them) off either side of the hinge, then use two phillips screwdirvers to undo the screw through the middle of the hinge mechanism. You can then remove the plastic plate from the bottom section of the straightners.
