gears stiff to change on 1997 golf?

after having the clutch and cable changed on my 1997 golf turbo diesel, the gears started to get stiff to change after a couple of months. will changing the gearbox oil help? if so do i use normal gearbox oil ?

new cable has stretched and will need to be adjusted,check clutch pedal should be same height off floor as brake pedal.
