I have used a wet cotton cloth and a soldering iron to remove dents. Remember to unplug the soldering iron before use.

Yes. Provided the wood is only compacted and not damaged.
If the wood fibres are damaged they'll stand up when you steam and give you a 'fluffy' surface.
