First thing you have to do is remove the door card. It is held in place by a number of small screws. Undo all of these screws and remove the door card by pulling it upwards and away from the door (there may be some glue around the edges, but the door card should come away pretty easily. Get the window approx. half way down and you should see the runner come into view inside the door itself. the window is held in the runner by two bolts (on a rover 200, at least) and double sided tape (isn't technology great?!) Undo the two bolts (if applicable) and DO NOT LOSE THE NUTS INSIDE THE DOOR! Lift the window out of the runner and attach very strong double-sided tape (from a decent motor factor) across the base of the window glass - approx. half an inch wide along both sides of the glass. reseat the window in the runner firmly and reattach both bolts (if applicable). Leave for a few minutes and then attempt to use the window control. If it works, replace the door trim. With the window in the fully down position, spray silicone lubricant (once again, from your friendly motor factor) around the window rubbers, to prevent the window catching. Your window should now be fixed.
