How can I fix my cd rewrite drive?

Our cd rw drive won't open. The "my computer" section doesn't even recognize it. I did get it to open manually, there were no disks stuck in it, nor anything else for that matter. I am thinking of just replacing the drive. Can I upgrade it to a dvd rewrite drive? Is that hard to do by yourself?
Thanks for your help...
It is an Hp pavilion 752n computer
ACPI Uniprocessor PC
the drive in question is an hp cd-writer

make sure the drive has its power going into it? this maybe the prob if so it maybe nackered drives are so easy to replace just open yer case touch your radiator first to take the static out otf you then pull off the ide and the power and replace with new drive job done windows should pick up the new hard ware on start up if you have plug and play switched on in your bios menu
