How do I replace my Electrolux electric cord ?

I have a replacement cord for my Electrolux Silverado canister model vacume. (yes it is 23 years old and has always worked great. It has even survived 3 teenagers and gets used many times as if it were meant for the garage.) This is the first major repair. How can I get to the end of the old cord and replace with the new one without disturbing the spring underneath?

HERE'S A LINK THAT WILL SHOW YOU WHAT THE VAC LOOKS LIKE WHEN IT'S DISSEMBLED. SCROLL TO THE BOTTOM.

I HAVE AN OLYMPIA ONE THAT'S 27 YEARS OLD AND HAVE ONLY HAD TO REPLACE MINOR PARTS. IT'S A SHAME WHAT ELECTROLUX HAS DONE TO THEIR ONCE EXCELLENT VACS.
YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO POP OFF THE BACK OF THE CANISTER. WHAT IT WOULD SIT ON IF UP ENDED. THE CORD WINDER IS A SELF CONTAINED UNIT THAT IS ATTACHED BY A COUPLE WIRES TO THE MOTOR. MAKE SURE YOU KNOW WHERE THE WIRES GO WHEN YOU REPLACE THE UNIT. (TAKE PICS) NOW YOU MAY HAVE TO REPLACE THE WHOLE UNIT IF YOU CAN'T DISASSEMBLE THE WINDER. IF IT'S A CASE WHERE THE CORD WON'T GO BACK INTO THE MACHINE BECAUSE YOU PULLED IT OUT TOO FAR, TRY GENTLY PULLING AND LETTING GO A COUPLE TIMES THAT USUALLY WORKS. GOOD LUCK...AND KEEP THAT CLASSIC RUNNING!
