After removing the fixing bolt the fan can be eased off the spindle with a bit of effort. I used a bolster chisel (3" wide blade) between the casing and the fan, this spreads the load on the casing. It took a while because the shaft of the motor was rusty, but patience was rewarded. A wwodruff key holds the fan steady on the shaft.
