mk2 vw golf 1.6 driver, excessively high CLUTCH bite point?

the clutch pedal is nearly at the top of travel before biting, and is very tricky to control as the is no real progression between being driven and coasting...its all or nothing ! although no slipping has ever occured...
its an auto adjusting clutch.
any ideas ? as the haynes manual tells me nothing relating to these symptoms.
