What does a check battery light that comes on intermittently mean?

I have a 2001 Ford Focus manual shift, with a rebuilt engine in it. The engine was replaced about 2 months ago. The check battery light is now coming on intermittently, sometimes when stopped at a light in idle, sometimes when driving along the road. Any suggestions as to what might be the problem?

" possible reasons

1. Check serpentine belt which "runs" all the ancillaries to the engine (used to be called the fan belt!!).
2. Take car to nearest tyre fitting/battery centre and ask them to check alternator output and battery status - free service
