Dear Andy,

At What shop did you buy your mechanism??
I've looking around but could not find it easily.

Thnxs,

Arnoud

Arnoud, May 2012
Just bought a new mechanism from Hong Kong for my accord 05 as was told that to replace laser would not be 100%. Changed the mechanism but still got the dreading error. Any help regarding this please??

Chris B-Malta, April 2012
I had disk reading error in my 2004 accord. After some searching I found a complete new internal mechanism for 38 euros from a company in hong kong. So easy to change works like new

Andy, April 2012
my 05 honda jazz satnav has been back to Alpine through our honda dealer over & over again, stripped, replaced laser, at least 3 times 2 new discs new internall antenna and still Disc reading error occurs why ??

RKIR, March 2012
After 3 failures (over 5 years) of the screen stateing disc read error, and 3 successful stripdown and cleans ,the last attempt failed.I called Andy,he came when he said he would. He did what he said he would. The laser had failed.A recon unit with new laser fitted. Now works fine. Can`t ask for more.

Rob, August 2011
how much do you charge Andy and do you replace the parts or just clean them

MG, July 2011
The problem might go away, however it will return. Dont fall into the trap of buying a new one far to expensive. I got my one repaired, it was the dvd reader that needed to be replaced. (Thats normally the problem) I went to Audio File in-car Bishops Stortford East Herts CM23 2QE 01279 757218 for just under £200.00 job done, yes £200.00 is a lot of money, but far cheaper than a new or refurbished one

Just had to leave a message to say thank you to both Craig (December 08) and pol141 (June 09) for their tips on mending your own Sat Nav. Our CRV (55 plate) has had a disc error for 2 years but we weren't prepared to pay the hideous charges Honda were asking. Followed these links, with a cotton bud and some Mr Muscle window cleaner, and it's fixed !!! Amazing. I wonder if Honda use a cotton bud and Mr Muscle, what a money-spinner !!!

Andy came and fixed our sat nav, that read disk error. Nice guy and no problems, all works fine now.

Paul E, March 2011
Hi , I have the same "disk Error" problem, I have a 2004 CRV and have been thinking about updating the disk, but I am unsure after reading all your comments, is it actually a disk error or is it another problem, if I go and buy a new disk will it still be the same. I went in to Honda in Solihull and asked if they have a disk I could try, but they had no disk available. your help would be great! thanks Vince.

Vince, February 2011
Baby wipe and ruler worked a treat for my 05 CRV. Many thanks!

Steve, February 2011
Just tried the ruler and baby wipe tip to fix my Honda CRV sat nav and it's worked brilliantly! Was quoted £350 by Honda to get it fixed so really pleased.
Thanks for tip.

I have a 2.4 Accord and since the cold spell the system is playing up. Have not got the disc error message though, my problem is that the unit wont boot up. I suudenly went off on a journey then, when I stopped and restarted it booted up again, this has got gradually worse now it wont boot at all at first, after about 1/2 hour or so, when the car warms up and I stop and restart it might boot up again. The whole unit is dead initially in as much as no disc reading light showing in the CD tray and the screen is black. Because it does fire up sometimes it cant be the screen. I noted that when it works the safety message displays first then when acknowledged the disk boots up so am I right in thinking it cant be the disk as I dont get the safety message.

any ideas?

Alan, January 2011
did the baby wipe thing and it worked thank you

russ, December 2010
I have a 55 (06) CRV and my sat nav started playing up about 12 months ago - slow to start up - especially when a cold morning - the time took longer and longer then eventually it gave up completely and I got the dreaded Disc Reading Error.
Took it into my Honda dealer (where I bought it from) and they told me £500 to fix or £1000 for a new one - I nearly fainted. So I suppose it devalued my car by £1000 if I tried to sell it. I was most upset.
I went to the Honda website and found the feeback part - sent them a brief but to the point complaint and received an email back saying that customer services would be in touch within 24 hours.
Anyway, no one contacted me - so I sent them another email, still nothing, then I sent them an email asking if I should complain about their complaints procedure! That got a response - to cut a long story short - Honda paid for it to be fixed - it took 6 weeks.
All I had to pay for was the labour for the garage taking it out and putting it back in - £70.
So, get the bit between your teeth and patiently keep on at Honda - I think they hope you will get tired of persuing them but dont give up its worth it in the end!
My sat nav is now working perfectly and I am chuffed to bits with it.
Hope this helps someone else......

Had the same problem with our 2004 CRV, tried the ruler and baby wipe, no joy, so followed the link Bert gave and after no too much sweat or heartache, hey presto it's worked. Want to sell ours, so absolute godsend. Just want to thank whoever took the time and effort to post those pics and instructions, invaluable and saved us a costly trip to Honda. Many thanks

Poundy, October 2010
I have just tried the ruler method using a computer screen wipe. Removed the disc, wrapped the wipe round a 12 inch ruler (folding under at the front to hold the wipe in place), inserted into slot, moved side to side a few times and bingo - it worked.

Year long problem as above with Honda accord, i was told minimum £280 to fix, after reading above I decided to visit the local £1 shop
I bought a ruler and pack of window wipes total spent £2, carried out cleaning as above and it worked first time. Thanks

David Airdrie, August 2010
Thank you everyone for all the tips and info. I've had a DVD read error on my 2005 CR-V Sat Nav for a few weeks now and have just tried the ruler and baby wipe fix and it's now working like new again. There was a considerable amount of dirt on the wipe which was obviously affecting it. Not sure why Honda don't recommend regular cleaning (probably so they can make more money by fixing it later). Having said that I've had 5 years problem free driving and this has been the only small but inconvenient problem as, like everyone, I've come to rely on having the directions. I would have no hesitation in recommending this procedure to others, just give it a go!

station mot centre, July 2010
Many, many thanks to everyone on here. Having spent over a year with the dreaded disc read error, and not being prepared to pay the quoted £450+, I tried the baby wipe round a knife trick and completed a forced download - The sat nav is now working a treat. Boy, do I wish I read this a year ago (great site). The car is back to her old self again, and I'm not going to get lost anymore - fantastic. Cheers to everyone.

Rob (Peterborough), July 2010
Well I found some time to produce an illustrated guide to cleaning the lens the hard (and best) way. Well it wasn't actually that difficult - just be careful and take your time.

Today I read through Craig and pol141 advice and guidance, plus looked at the photo kindly provided by digitaldr, bit the bullet and removed the unit and stripped it down, was amazed at how straight forward it was.

Used a cotton bud with a drop of vodka and cleaned the laser a few times, reassembled and reset, works a treat ... thanks to all of you who gave advice, only took just over an hour from start to finish !

Manacles1, April 2010
I've been getting the DVD error on my UK 2005 Honda CRV exec for a while now. Tried the cleaning with a wipe over a ruler method with some inital success. Interestingly error seemed to be more frequent on damp days - maybe due to condensation on an already dirty lens?

Anyway I took the plunge tonight and, using the instructions here, opened the head unit and cleaned the lens - which was very difficult to find. I thought it'd be useful to take a picture of its location - wasn't possible to actually get a shot of the lens itself - it's too small and inaccessible. Here's the pic http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/OVfhXpGHejQbuXc5Wj_n6Q?authkey=Gv1sRgCJvCvtCkt4jZ7AE&feat=directlink

I'm 99% sure I've marked the right spot! By the way I used a halogen desk lamp and the lens appeared blue rather than red as some others have said. I took lots more pictures and will post a complete guide if I have time.

Finally a big thanks to all the pioneers!

digitaldr, March 2010
good old fashioned 12" ruler and baby wipe what a result cheers old lad

barnsley chris, March 2010
Hi All

Like many others here i ejected the DVD to check the version.

After puting it back in i got the dredded "Error Reading from Disk" (it was working fine on the way home as i had just purchased the CRV.

Tried the lens cleaner for 2 Days (No Joy)
Tried a wipe wrapped around a ruler (No Joy)

Eventually bit the bullet and removed the unit following the directions in this forum from Craig and Pol101.

Cleaned out a fair bit of grime using a cotton bud soaked in windowline.

Polished the lens with a couple of clean dry fresh cotton buds.

Have reassembled and reinserted in to the dash and powered it up but i dont have sat coverage here where i live, so it cant do the setup. So i dont know if its been fully sucesfull or not.

ONE THING TO ANYONE THINKING OF ATTEMTING THIS PROCESS.
------BE SURE TO HAVE YOUR RADIO CODE BEFORE YOU START-----

I diddnt and i spent 2 hours looking for it..! Bevntually finding it in the service history manual

Many thanks

UTD81, January 2010
Hi, i had same DVD error so sat nav was down but radio worked OK. i have carefully followed craigs instructions but when putting the unit back into the car and starting the ignition i now have a completely dead unit with no radio, CD or sat nav. Checked relevant fuse and its OK. Only strange thing was that the 'back up' fuse had blown (coincidence?) which stopped the central locking from working but when this fuse was replaced C/L was OK. However, the whole unit - ie - radio, CD & Sat Nav still dead though! Any ideas!

Hello! i wish to thank all of you in this forum having succcessfully repaired my sat nav as per Craigs instructions, my 2004 crv started showing that nagging disc error message, i took it to honda in hemelhempstead and was quoted £280.00 plus vat, I only spent £1.99 on a bottle of spectacles cleaner from boots. Does any one know where I can buy a new DVD laser pickup for one of these units?

Colin Morrison, December 2009
very thorough answers below - .oh yes the Sat Nav - joystick broke two years ago - replaced at £150 - then a month ago did not want to recognise DVD - cleaned thorughly and now works a treat - Honda said £350 - what a rip off - I definitly would not buy a Honda again..although their bikes are great.. Thank you for the answers below - saved me a lot of money

ricardo, November 2009
Used a six inch plastic ruler (local Tesco didn't have 12 inch ones in stock!) and a windolene wipe - worked a treat.

DigitalDr, October 2009
I too had DVD disc read error constantly. I tried the ruler and wet wipe which did not work for me. However after several attempts of trying the cotton bud from the back of the unit routine I had no joy. I then decided to strip the unit down further and managed to spot the lens once I'd spotted the lens I gave it a thorough wipe over with a cotton bud and glass cleaner which worked a treat. Thank god for forums.

Ahms1, October 2009
I too have same problem with disc error which fixed itself twice but now refuses to work. WHoever tests these things should be shot, and it puts you off buying Honda. However - great suggestions for manually fixing it and I'll try them all.

David, October 2009
How stupid can you get !!! meaning myself!!
Sometimes we all forget the obvious. Have got this problem on a 52 plate:- Error reading disc. Had not crossed my mine to do what is so simple a check as all drives get so dirty when used! Especially if you have kids who put discs in the wrong place with their sticky mits.
Will report back to let people know if mine starts working.

Barry, September 2009
just done the 12 inch rule and baby wipe method . wrapped a normal baby wipe tightly around a plastic rule, inserted about 6-7 inches inside the dvd slot and moved sideways and slightly in and out, did this twice and hey presto!

el seano, September 2009
Just tried out the ruler and a baby wet wipe ,it actually worked after about three tries, Honda wanted £250 + vat it took me 5 minutes and 2p, good job have a go what have you got to lose.

Deano, August 2009
Just followed instructions in posts here - it works and it is a lot easier than I first thought. Nice one.

PR, August 2009
Just followed the guidelines from Craig and Pol141. Very useful hints by Pol141. Managed to clean the lense. Not sure if that made it work as soon after the installation had the same dvd read error but then used the ruler with the cloth to clean the lense from the front. So far OK.

Jamal, August 2009
Had same problems with my Honda CRV sat nav here in France. Local dealer quoted 2500 euros for a renovated replacement or 7000 euros for a new unit. (Quoted by Honda in Paris) Eventually sent mine to Maple Audio in Bristol. They were fantastic. The unit was repaired in 48 hours and then despatched to me in France. Cost for repair was £250 plus an extra £30 for postage to France. Can not recommend them highly enough.

Richard, August 2009
Just followed, cotton bud/ window cleaner system. Had no sat nav for over a year, gave up trying to fix it after people asking silly money to fix it. One cotton bud 3p, one drop of window cleaner 1p, one bit of advice on this site------priceless.
MY SAT NAV NOW WORKS. My other woman in my life now speaks to me again. lol. Thanks one and all.

Peter, June 2009
Did mine yesterday following the instructions on this page. Was reasonably straightforward though was quite nervous at the time. When putting it all back together, I seemed to have a spare pink wire left over not plugged in ! I am note sure it was one which was connected in the first place as everything seems to be working. The lesson is to take notes or draw pictures as you go along, dont just trust your memory if you are a bit of an amateur like me.

Oh, and make sure you have your radio code to reactivate the device when you reconnect it to the battery.

I would recommend anyone to muster the confidence to have a crack at this, it may save you hundreds of pounds. What is the worst that can happen, it still isnt working ?!

My local honda dealer said I needed a new unit at £1,000. I feel like reporting to trading standards as clearly this wasnt the case.

At last i have got my audio controls back (as well as the satnav).....wont be buying a car with a built in satnav again.

Thanks for all the advice on this site.

Dan, June 2009
try calling a company called oe electronics in calne wiltshire I am led to believe they deal with these units, not sure of number but should be easily googled.

Darren, June 2009
I have just fixed my the sat nav for my honda crv 2002. cannot read message. was intermitent then permanant about six months ago. Tryed cleaning with ruler and spec cloth. no joy.

Decided to remove unit and clean with direct view of the laser lens.

two screws under the vents. have to remove facia surrounding the sat nav

four screws for the sat nav

removed back plate about 10 little screws

top plate removed

removed circuit board (note this is a bit fiddly)

specsprayed cotton bud put it through the middle hole at the back and cleaned the lens while looking through a hole on the top.

the lens is at about 2 oclock. if the back is 12.
only about 3 to 4 cm from the center of the unit.

locating the lens was the most difficult bit.
look for a tiny speck of light reflecting off it.
like a drop of water.

Honda charges £300plus.

jay, June 2009
Hello, just thought I would relay my satnav experience as I have been able to repair mine thanks to this page. My 2002 CRV satnav started giving a disc error last week, I took it to Honda who wanted £ 350 to send it away for repair ( I presume to Alpine ) with no guarantees, or £ 4468.00 to replace it - that’s right, four and a half THOUSAND pounds ! Firstly, I tried the cleaning cloth strapped to the ruler method, without success and so took the whole unit out and set to work. I followed the guide kindly provided by Craig in the 2008 posting, but had a couple of problems, firstly, I got the unit all stripped down only to find I had left the disc in and thus had to reassemble it and connect it back up in the car to get the disc out, most inconvenient ! The second, and this is what took me the most time, was actually identifying the laser lens. Eventually, by shining the torch through the top of the unit and looking through the top at the same time, I was able to locate the lens. If you have the unit laying on a flat surface with the front nearest you, the lens is nearer the centre of the unit rather than the outside edge. The lens is to the right of centre and slightly back. For anyone who has not seen one, it is small, round, made of glass and red. It looks like a drop of water if that helps. ( I knew what to look for, but just could not see it ). Once found, I was able to slide a cotton bud in from the back and to the right towards the lens whilst looking in from the top. One thing I did find was that there was no need to remove the back plate with the three tiny screws and two springs, this plate has some round holes in it, three I think, and I could quite easily fit the cotton bud through one of these. Make sure you clean the lens a number of times ( mine was filthy ) and took four goes to get it properly clean. I did not have any glasses cleaning fluid, so used some of the clear spray window cleaner. Reassembly was very straight forward with all the screws being the same size, apart from two much longer ones which hold the back plate in place by the bottom right cable connection as you look at the back. Although it has only be a day since repair, my satnav is now working as good as new.

Having followed Craig’s instructions, I found the following differences :-
1. There was no need to remove the back plate held in place with tiny screws and springs.
2. There was no need to remove the mounting brackets from either side of the unit.
3. There was no need to remove the screen.
4. I did not have a large black box to contend with.
5. There was no need to separate the DVD from the CD.

Hope this helps.

pol141, June 2009
Hi, I got as far as to have stripped out the unit, to the point of "Then removed plate on back of DVD held with very small screws and springs. Did not detach springs just gently moved plate up" in Ken's 2009 post. But it wasn't obvious to me what was the DVD lens head when shining light into the back (someone else posted it's 1 o'clock if LCD screen is 6 o'clock). A post on another forum talk about having to remove the lens cover through winding the lens motor - anyone knows more detail on this?
To add to the discussions: a link on how to put in the Alpine system (good for reverse engineering) http://homepages.tesco.net/dash.dash/

I too have had this error. I also bought a DVD cleaner which worked to clear the error for a few months. The error re-occurred and each time it took longer and longer to clear until evenutally nothing would clear it. I took the unit apart and cleaned the laser as has been suggested, on this site, but this didn't work either. I phoned Alpine service centre who were more than helpful and will service the unit and replace laser for £146 incl p+p. The only difficult bit is getting it to them via special delivery about £22 and remember to increase the insurance to cover the cost of the unit.

Have tried taking the unit out and cleaning the heads (cost me about 30 mins, £0.01 for a cotton bud and about £0.005 for the cleaning fluid i used), honda quoted £500+ , and guess what - - - - it works perfectly now although i do have 1 screw and a little plastic bit left over, i'll keep these for next time i save myself £499.98 and it ONLY NEEDS THE LASER HEAD CLEANING

Finally got round to looking at the same problem on our 2005 CRV. Removed the unit, two screws up under the air vents. Pull out trim and then four bolts retaining the unit. Pull out unit and remove several plugs.

Remove mounting plates on sides of unit and large black box hanging on these and plugged into back of unit. Removed the rear cover (about 10, screws didn't count) then lifted top off. Removed the screen, 4 screws. Seperated DVD from CD (another four screws I think). Then I may have started removing unecessary parts and you may see a better way for the next steps. Took the circuit board off the top of the DVD but this is held to the unit by ribbon cable that can't be detached. Then removed plate on back of DVD held with very small screws and springs. Did not detach springs just gently moved plate up. Then by shining a tourch in the back I could see the laser through gaps in the top of the unit (with previosly mentioned circuit board held to one side). Once the laser was found it was simple to put some cleaner on a cotton bud and reach it through the open back of the unit.

Reassemble. Then wonder why you have two screws left. Take apart again and then realise you miss counted and they were the ones that held the top on.

Any way it works perfectly now.

For the Honda Sat-Nav problem. This is what I did and it was 100% successful. Take a standard, thin 12" plastic ruler and a 6" length of double-sided sticky tape. Place the tape along one side of the ruler at the end. Cut a piece of lint-free cloth the same size (very slghtly larger) than the sticky tape and stick it down over the tape and make sure it's well stuck, Next, give the cloth a good heavy spray with spectacle lens cleaner (available from SpecSavers) and push the ruler (cloth side down) into the sat-nav dvd slot. Slowly move the ruler from left to right for 30 seconds or so and withdraw carefully. Make sure that you have your finger on the end of the cloth so that it comes out cleanly. Clean the dvd and replace in slot. Carry out forced download as described above and voila!

THE GREEN LIGHT COMES ON MY TOMTOM 910 BUT NOTHING COMES ON SCREEN

I JACKSON, October 2008
Mine went pear shaped as well. Tried all the usual, dvd cleaners as well. Nothing worked. Then when cleaning my glasses with Boots Lens Cleaner, I thought why not? Nothing to loose. So I cleaned the dvd with the lens cleaner, then sprayed the cleaner onto the glasses cloth, got a plastic spoon and put it on the handle. Slowly and carefully, I placed it in the crv dvd aperture, wiggled it about back and forth, left and right several times. Another spray and repeated. Then I put the dvd in and it loaded! I did a force download and it is now back to normal, better than it was in the first place. Not sure how long it will last though - and I still prefer my tomtom, but at least I have the proper display on my CRV now as it was, rather than that stupid bl**dy message dvd error which was really getting to me. Has to be worth a go if nothing else works. I think the motto for this cr*ppy satnav system has to be Quando Omni Flunkus Moritati.

I've had the same problem mate 4 over a year. It started off working in spasems when it liked and now it just reads disc error constantly. Def a fault with the unit and how they can charge £200 to get it fixed is a disgrace.

WE CAN USUALLY REPAIR THESE SAT NAV SYSTEMS BUT IT COST ABOUT £200.00

OK, the official Honda method for forcing sat-nav to reset to older disc is as follows:
1. Start the engine.
2. error message appears on screen with old disc inserted.
3. Push 'MENU' and 'ZOOM DOWN' switches simultaneously for 2 seconds.
4. Screen turns to SYSTEM LINK page with a fanfare.
5. Press 'NEXT' switch (opens car staus page).
6. Press 'NEXT' switch (opens yaw rate page).
7. Press 'NEXT' switch (opens diagnosis menu page).
8. Select 'UNIT CHECK'.
9. Select 'FORCE DOWN LOAD'.
System will now start to download the old operating system firmware from the old disc, showing progress on a green bar gauge.
When finished the unit should be able to be started normally.

try cleaning the units rails that the laser travels along.

My CRV Sat Nav has also just gone faulty with disk read error. Although I do not have a solution it would appear from the threads at http://www.topix.net/forum/autos/honda/TI21GMRPKUDTPJD7D that this is a common failing, which from this source indicates the unit is supplied to Honda by Alpine.
As this problem has only just occurred 21st May 2007 (CRV is 4 years old) the only test I have conducted so far is to copy all of the files from the DVD disk (Version 2.00) to my PC which would indicate disc is ok and that it is in fact the unit that is faulty. Welcome any further feedback.............
