I had the same thing: towards the end of every winter I open the throttle body and use a rag to clean the filth off the metal butterfly valve and its housing.

works a charm.
Its a 15 min job.

On the top of the crank case leading off the back left there are 2 breather tubes, the left hand one from the air-filter and the right hand one leads to under the Throttle body*, you'll need to remove the throttle body and clean up the metal butterfly and on the underside of this there is a very small breather hole (on the underside inside of the throttle body leading to the breather tube mentioned above *) these are notorious for getting blocked, when this is cleared out the car will idle like a dream. I've had the same problem and this has certainly worked for me

Clean the idle air control valve and all will be fine

this is a common fault on the vectra i have the same problem myself, i have been told that it is the camshaft and the crankshaft sensors that need cleaning or even replacing i have cleaned the camshaft one so far and have yet to do the crankshaft sensor i have had a quote on the sensors and they are about £27 each to get hold of but there are many different types for this car. good luck it is a pain of a fault
