Briggs and Stratton 9000 classic. Plug carbons up etc?

My lawnmower engine has recently being producing smoke. The plug carbons up very quickly and the engine stops. Clean the plug and away I go again - for a short while. Its now got to the point were the engine runs for a minurte or too and then conks. Tried changing the plug, cleaning air filter etc My grass is growing as I type!

It sounds like the rings might be worn and may need replacing. Do you use the recommended Briggs & Stratton oil in the engine? Using the wrong oil can be hazardous to the life of the engine and will shorten the life of your Briggs & Stratton engine.
