My 2000 Freelander 1.8 Serengeti air conditioning has just stopped working?

The air con button light comes on but the air temperature doesn't change - the car has done 58K miles & had a new head gasket at 42K miles. The air con has been used regularly & never been a problem before.
Could it just need re gassing or isi it likely to be something else?
Can I check anything before getting it re gassed?
Any ideas would be appreciated.
thanks

Aircon is not really a DIY proposition because you need a special piece of kit and they cost thousands. So I am afraid that you will need to visit a specialist. BTW I'd get rid of that car before the head gasket goes again and takes the rest of the engine with it. (They are prone to that failure.)
