What is the proper wire placement on a solenoid for a Murray riding mower?

My grandson removed the solenoid off our mower and now we're not sure of the proper wire placement. Where the reds go, black, etc. We know which is the ignition switch and where it goes. Any diagrams available online?

Hello Linda,

I have just replaced the solenoid on my 1996 Murray rider (with the help of my neighbor) and all is working well!

Here's what to do:
1. position solenoid so that the flat terminal is at back on right hand side.
2. heavy red wire from battery plus small red wire from fuse case should be joined together on back top terminal of solenoid.
3. small orange wire goes on the flat terminal by itself.
4. heavy red wire coming from engine connects to front top terminal (screw down).
5. small black and yellow wire connects to the screw which fastens solenoid to mower at back. Be sure to screw down other end as well (no wires connect to this frontmost screw).

Hope this helps!
Shirley
