Bosch WFK 2801?

I have "inherited" the above washinfg machine and have no idea what the purpose of the draining "thingy" is at the bottom left hand side is for (under the removable cover).
Can you help? Is it a filter?

hi ann yes its the pump filter (only remove when theres no water in the machine) it needs cleaning out from time to time
