Why is the stitch not being made on my Singer 'Favourite electronic machine?

I have checked that the machine is correctly threaded, put in a new needle and ensured it is properly in the slot, the stitch is on straight, the tension on auto but the stitch is not being made and I finish up with loose threads from the bobbin and the spool. I've tried removing the bobbin case and cleaning it. Please can anyone suggest what is going wrong?

Hello Lesley,
Believe it or not the most common fault is people putting the needle in the wrong way round, I would definitely check that first, it the needle is not picking up the thread then that is the cause, if it is picking up the thread on every stitch then it is either a threading problem, tension problem or bobbin problem.
