how do i fix my memory stick if says the usb devise attached mulfunctioned?

i saved some work that i havnt got anywere else in my memory stick and i want to get it out but its malfunctioned and says that windows does not recognive it. If anyone have any one has tips please answer as quick as possible

I don't have a stick but an usb memory drive, I disconnected the unit shut down my computer reconnected the unit and booted my computer. Then I followed the windows prompts to reinstall.
