My camera was blinking an ""H" also. I looked up troubleshooting in my manual and it indicated that I was to remove the battery and wait for the H to quit flashing. I took out the battery and when it quit flashing it went back to "0" and the H went away. Then I put the battery back in and it works just fine

Take battery out. Short across battery terminals using wire or metal object(s). Put battery back in.
You may, or may not, need to take the film out and put it back in as well.

Hrm.. I think I agree with your theory about led/detector being the source of the trouble... I removed the battery and reinstalled it and the display then showed an accurate photo count, but the date was gone... now if I turn the camera on and take pictures the camera seems to operate correctly until the next time I turn the camera off and back on then the H is flashing again. Have you had any further luck finding a solution?

I've been trawling the internet looking for a solution, as I have about 15 of these otherwise good cameras with the flashing 'H'. If you put a developed film (clear) into a working camera you get the flashing 'H'. I'm wondering if the camera thinks a developed film has been put in - in other words a faulty led/detector in the film path is at fault or out of alignment/dirty?
I used to be a camera repairer and would like to solve this one.
